Maybe he hadn't been supportive enough afterward. Was this his fault?

Elwood's head filled with doubts, but he was still angry. He was angry with her for giving up so quickly. He was angry with himself for missing the signs, whatever they had been. Finally, he broke her gaze, looking back at the water rolling placidly along beneath him. How was he supposed to respond to her? He wasn't ready to move on, but he didn't want to admit that to her.

Finally, he murmured, "Should I?" There was still a bitter edge to his voice, though he was beginning to feel defeated. He wasn't sure how much longer he could fight for something that clearly wasn't meant to be.
