One of his mother's eyes pinged open, triggered by Pasha's paws against the invisible line separating Safe Den from Very Interesting But Dangerous Outside. She unfolded, quietly, and padded after her pensive little son. Pasha seemed to spend a lot of his time thinking about things. Not like Swift, whose intensity was admirable but taxing, but in a manner altogether more whimsical and childish. He might make a good Outrider one day, provided he did not take after Whittier.


"You want to go outside?" she asked, towering over her boy. The tips of her claws brushed his fuzzy flank.
