There was a moment of silence before Finley answered his question, in which the two wolves simply enjoyed each other's presence and touch. But when she did speak, Elwood withdrew slightly, his brows knitting together with mild concern. Finley wouldn't really have left Eljay alone, would she...?
She quickly put his brief bout of worry to rest as he recognized the teasing tone of her voice, and then she insisted that he needed to "cut the umbilical cord." He laughed, lowering his head to bump his crown affectionately against her shoulder. It turned out that Magpie was watching Elwood Jr. and he nodded, pleased with the caliber of their babysitter. If she had been able to put up with the much more active firebirds, then Eljay would be a piece of cake.
"Well, I'm glad you asked her," he said, grinning at Finley and taking a few steps away from her. He moved through the shallow water then turned back to face her, using a forepaw to flick a few harmless drops in her direction. "I've missed you." No truer words had been spoken; although they were almost always within close proximity of one another, the nature of their relationship had changed as soon as Eljay was born. They were never alone, and their own requirements had been put on the back burner in order to tend to their son. This "adult time" was much needed.
