The fur on his flank spiked softly, and Riordan took a gander at the grove surrounding them, being as casual about his wariness as possible. There was no scent of pack here, but that didn't mean Mordecai was all alone. The others could be laying in wait to ambush him, he thought as a sour look crossed his ruddy face. 

"Not lookin' to make me the target, are you?" Yes, being blatant about your mistrust is a great way to make friends. He followed this pointed question with a soft laugh, but it was obviously a little strained.
