A low-pitched sound tumbled down to Elwood's ears from the slope of the caldera, and as he turned to look he made out the dark figure of Peregrine picking his way across the uneven terrain. He smiled, watching his friend for a brief moment, then resumed his patrol at a much slower pace. This would give Peregrine the chance to descend the mountain and join him in just a short time.

When the Alpha finally approached him, he first asked about the whereabouts of Finley and Elwood Jr. He added that Wildfire had done a bit of exploring with Finley, which caused Elwood's brows to raise. The Beta female must have chosen to venture further after sending her niece back home. "I didn't know that Wifi caught up with her. I guess she's still out there somewhere," he said, sounding a bit more nonchalant than he felt. "Eljay is with Raven," he continued. Magpie had become the Blackthorns' go-to babysitter, but she, too, had departed recently. Luckily, Peregrine's dark-haired daughter was proving to be a trustworthy caretaker.

He fell into step alongside his companion. "Not much is up with me. Just waiting for that crazy Fin to come back. She said she'd only be gone a couple of days," Elwood said, glancing at Peregrine to see if he had any thoughts on Finley's extended vacation.
