He had realized, after spending days in the seclusion of the Otatso Wetlands, that part of him was afraid to settle. His three years of life thus far had been marked by travel, wolves crossing his path like ghosts—ephemeral. He saw all their faces when he dreamed, and would wake up in a panic as he realized he could not speak any of their names. But for his sister, Key, and immediate family—the memories of those faces were fading, becoming more and more difficult to remember.

Curran wasn't often plagued with dark thoughts, but he was suddenly overwhelmed with depression and a desperate need to find somewhere to call home. And so, though the sun was growing higher, the Phase exited the dark and humid wetland, searching for a larger—and cleaner—body of water to cleanse himself in. The quacking of ducks alerted him to the fact that one might be nearby, and he made his way... his pace quickening as the dried mud that clung to him grew more and more uncomfortable.
