The pup let out an earsplitting yip, then dodged beneath Peregrine's feet. Had he just been outmaneuvered by a pup? Snarling in surprise and frustration, the Alpha wolf whirled. The whelp was fleeing as he'd hoped and he could have let him go. But he wanted to leave a mark on the boy if he could. It was brutal and cruel of him but it would send a strong message to the boy's parents. Besides, letting the puppy get away unscathed was unthinkable; what kind of Warden was he if a baby could escape him?

He gave pursuit, staying hot on the child's heels. When he suddenly vanished, Peregrine put on the brakes and circled back, brow furrowed in confusion. He quickly found the hole where Leo had tumbled. It was much to small for him, though the dark wolf thrust his muzzle as deep as he could manage (quite likely not deep enough) and snapped his teeth, hoping to catch an ear, a snout, a paw, a tail—any appendage which he could grasp and yank the pup back out of hiding.
