While Turq tried to decide whether to be infuriated or reassured by this development, the sylph explained her reasoning for trying to walk away. Turq's jaws parted to protest, yet no sound escaped her.

Finally, she gritted her teeth. "I got mad because I thought you were laughing at me," she said in a hard, quiet voice. "I was trying to get you dinner and—and I fucked it up royale, okay? Then I thought I saw you laughing at me..." She rolled her shoulders as if trying to work out some tension, her tail switching like a cat's. For some reason, she couldn't bring herself to meet Rivet's eyes.
