Peregrine hesitated, then couldn't keep the word from tumbling incredulously from his lips. "...old? Oss, we just turned three," he said softly but almost with a touch of alarm as he looked at her weary face sinking down toward his forepaws. That lump in his throat grew more prominent. "My body is failing me," she'd said. She wasn't old but was she sick?
"Oss—" he began to say when she cocked her head and smiled up at him. "Are you pulling my leg right now? Don't do that to me," he rebuked her with fond, brotherly sternness. "Seriously, are you okay? What's up? And remember," he reminded her, keeping a straight face, "Oss is short for Osprey, not Opossum. No more playing dead."
