Macawi gave her famous coyote grin and asked, "When is Thistle expected to have the pups? And Macawi wonders how many there will be, though she knows there is no way to tell… At any rate, she is happy for Thistle, and Thistle's mate, angry though he may be." She gave a laugh, and then stared out at the distant ocean.

"Macawi wonders… if she will ever have pups of her own, or even a mate at all… What wolf would take her as a mate? Macawi knows it happened once, or she would not be a quarter wolf, but… will it happen again? Considering what most wolves think of coyotes…" She sighed. "Is this coy-wolf destined to be alone, without a mate or pups, forever?"
