A groan broke loose when Peregrine moved, trying to untangle himself from the twisted root that had likely saved his life. Unsure how he felt about that just yet, he did a quick assessment of the damage. By some godforsaken miracle, he didn't appear to have any broken bones. But everything hurt. He felt like one giant, blooming bruise. The rain that pelted down from the sky wasn't helping, either. He gasped as he tried to push himself to his feet, flinching when suddenly something warm touched his face. He was startled to see his mate.

That was when he became suddenly aware of something else: there was a peculiar but familiar taste in his mouth. Turning away from Fox, he spat on the ground. Just before the rain washed it away, he saw threads of bright red blood in the saliva. Was he bleeding internally? Certain that he was, Peregrine looked up at his sodden mate, not sure what to say for himself. He still wasn't entirely sure he was glad to have survived the fall, which made him avert his jade gaze from her face.

And his single eye fell upon a white blur scrambling up the slope toward them. And just like that, Peregrine knew: he didn't want to die, after all. "Fox," the soaked, sore Alpha hissed, "we have to get out of here." He was in no condition to defend himself, much less fight, against possibly several wolves. Being forced to run for his life was just punishment for his crimes as a father, as well as his stupid-as-fuck decision to jump off the cliff in the first place.

"Run!" he snapped at her, just to be perfectly clear, waiting for her to leap ahead and sparing a glance downhill toward the charging wolf before facing forward and attempting to beat a hasty retreat around the side of the mountain, moving at a downward angle. They would be seriously fortunate if they didn't break their fucking necks trying to get the hell out of dodge. As it was, every bone and sinew in Peregrine's body screamed in protest.
