Nocturne Summit BWP3: PREY OPPORTUNITY

I have permission to PP Fox. :)

I hope y'all like this plot twist (if you don't, blame Remedy)! Obviously, it's entirely up to you whether your character was impacted in any way!

As if this entire situation wasn't already direly out of control, the downpour suddenly increased. It was like trying to run through a waterfall. It was next to impossible for Peregrine to see anything, forcing him to slow down lest he break his neck. He tried to locate Fox in the deluge but only saw an orange blur beside him. He opened his mouth to bark at her but a sudden clap of thunder drowned out his voice, shaking the ailing Alpha down to his very core. It sent a fresh wave of pain through him.

Gritting his teeth, he continued despite the onslaught. He could neither see, smell nor hear the party of wolves coming after them but he could sense them nonetheless. He felt the shadow of death looming over his shoulder. So he continued the urgent downward climb, even while continuing to wind around the mountainside. More than once, he slipped and nearly busted an ankle. He knew Fox struggled too. At one point, he thought he heard a cry, but between the rush of rain and a second and even louder peal of thunder, he couldn't be sure.

Somehow, the pair reached the base of the mountain. If they were still being chased, they might still have a chance to outrun their pursuers. Well, Fox would have a chance. Peregrine winced as his limbs locked painfully, reminding him of his tumble. He slowed. He saw his mate do the same but he snapped at her again. "Keep running, Fox! The Firebirds need you! Go!" He practically roared that last bit, just to make sure he was heard over the now continuous thunder.

She darted reluctantly ahead and Peregrine loped after her, whining with every few steps, the sodden fur on the back of his neck standing on end as he felt the hunting party getting closer. He even chanced a glance over his shoulder. The rain was still pouring down but he could see shapes on the mountainside; they had nearly reached the foot. They would gain on him in moments and tear him to shreds. With a pulse of fear, the swarthy wolf looked forward again and clenched his teeth as he tried to push past the pain and run for his life.

When the sky lit up like the flash of a camera and the air sizzled around him, Peregrine resisted the urge to slow. He felt a shock wave press at his back that made his teeth and bones ache and suddenly the wet air was filled with the smell of scorched earth. Still he refused to risk a backward glance. If he had looked, he would have seen that a bolt of lightning had struck the ground about a quarter of a mile behind him, in the general vicinity of his headhunters.
