When Peter eagerly jumped to join him, the Alpha's mouth opened to say something, only to clap shut. He didn't have the heart to tell him no. He paused, deliberating, then motioned for his young son to follow him. Peregrine kept his pace slow, not only so Peter could keep up with him, but out of respect for their lack of energy. As urgent as their need for food, they could not afford to rush.

"I'll take you down to the rabbit warren, see if anybody's home," he announced. It wasn't something he would usually do with a pup Peter's age but if there was any possibility of putting the runt in proximity with fresh meat, well, that was a good thing. The burrows were close to the borders but Peregrine would keep a close eye on the baby boy.

Hell, if the circumstances weren't so depressing, he might jokingly use the kid as bait to draw in another (hopefully smaller) predator to kill and eat. But Peregrine couldn't even entertain the thought of something like that. He swallowed the lump in his throat and kept moving, soon escorting Peter past the usual boundary line of the rendezvous site.
