As the runt of the litter, and his own growth hindered greatly from the famine, Pippin was unable to lift the boy upward with any force -- his own gaunt form shook from the energy used now alone.
 
He did not hear the cries of his mother in the background, or the snarl of his new opponent as she lunged forward. All Pippin could hear was the thrum of blood in his ears from his heartbeat -- all he felt was a slice of victory at serving what he believed was justice for his mother.
 
Inexperience allowed for mistakes, though, and he did not see Tavi as she struck. No sooner did he make to clench his teeth upon his possession did the force of the strike cause Tambourine to pop out of his mouth like a child losing their favorite piece of gum. His paws could not find purchase upon the ground as the wind was knocked from him, and tumbling forward, Pippin's smaller form fell to the earth where his face promptly met dirt. He felt a sickening crack in his ribs as his chest his the floor, felt the jarring pain as he gasped for air.
 
His eyes widened, and making to push away from the ground and see what happened, his eyes widened as Tavi's gaping jaws came toward him unrelenting... there was no escape from this, and a snarl bubbled past his lips as his jaws sought purchase now upon her.
