Emberwood hunger

He cried – the softest of whimpers that escaped him caused a shudder to course through him, and glancing up through blurry eyes, he caught sight of the she-wolf, lingering even closer still as she crept closer.  The breath all but wooshed out of him in fear, and without a pause, and now abandoning the only meal he had in.. well, he could not remember the last real meal he had, the boy ran.
 
His creamy paws stumbled as he pushed away, his golden fur sweeping back as he ran with a desperation and swiftness that only the instinct of flight could instill upon a malnourished child. He swept away, hoping to put as much distance between himself and the stranger as he could – and never once did Pippin look back.
