Everything was confusing.  More were disappearing, new were coming, and he didn't know how to make things happy again.  Didn't know if it was possible.  No matter what he did, Peregrine would still be gone.

He had gained a sister, apparently, though he had yet to meet her.  Yet again, a family member was lost only to be immediately replaced, but unlike with Peter, this time Gannet felt no resentment.

Just worry.  But when he was alone, he didn't have to worry about everyone else and how they were feeling.  Alone he could just worry about himself, something that only recently seemed a good thing.  Slowly he was working through his grief, but he couldn't when he was distracted.

Yet the anger; it had yet to leave.  And so, when the youth ran across a stranger, he stopped short in shock.  His mother's reaction last time flashed by; but that had been then.  This time the stranger was inside, and mom wasn't here.  Only he was, and only he could stop Liffey and Lagan from being taken, or Whip, or even mom.

His tail shot up and he lunged, legs churning as he there himself at the stranger without even a growl of warning.  He was young, inexperienced, but eager to protect what was theirs.
