Somehow, in all the chaos, Elwood hadn't realized that there was something wrong with Finley. He was right next to her, but his gaze was elsewhere, sweeping over his packmates and the puppies as the commotion slowly settled. Liffey's cry caused him to turn sharply and look at Finley, but his mate was already protesting and insisting that she was okay.

"Are you sure?" he asked quietly, though the words fell away as he watched Finley pull Oriole's lifeless body towards her. "Oh," he breathed softly as reality registered. But there were still four puppies left to be cared for; he would grieve the loss of Oriole, but he wouldn't linger.

Reluctantly, he pushed himself away from Finley and stood. "Does anyone need anything? Food?" he asked, glancing at the wolves that had been trapped in the cave. After his packmates' responses, he slipped away to hunt while the others rested.
