Earlier that morning, Rian had woken to the sound of a woodpecker drilling away at one of the trees above their little glade, creating a great deal of noise, and making it difficult for the yearling boy to reclaim his comfortable slumber. So he'd departed the den and wandered the short distance to a nearby hillock to observe the waving spring grass as the wind whistled carelessly over the plain and listen to the sweet song of morning as it illuminated the sky.
But his peaceful reverie came to an end when his mother's commanding call rose above the trees. A shard of pain ripped violently through his heart when he, once more, recalled his conversation with Cypress. That once-invasive thought was nearly all-consuming now, but he still hadn't the courage to tell his family. So, instead of sitting there rife with anxiety, he drew himself up and returned to the glade where Kaskara and Eimear were already waiting.
The crick of his tail was telling of his uncertainty, but he closed the distance between them to greet both properly. He pressed a sweet kiss to Eimear's muzzle, and then extended his neck to rub his cheek affectionately into the thick chocolate fur of his mother's ruff. Once finished, he circled around them both to stand just off Kaskara's left shoulder.

As ruthless as it all may seem the wild cares not for the weaker beings.
