As soon as Elwood shifted, he saw what had grabbed her attention: there was a wolf making a beeline for them.

Nothing about this stranger's appearance suggested that it was approaching the borders for a peaceful palaver, so the guardian immediately went on the defensive. His hackles raised and his lips peeled back from his teeth, and he began to move forward, planning to intercept the loner before he or she got anywhere near his territory. He gave a warning snarl, and when the wolf did not slow its pace, he continued forward.
