When he saw Valette approach, Nikai wagged his tail. He nuzzled the underside of Valette's chin when she reached him. It didn't go unnoticed that his mother was absolutely aglow and looked probably the happiest he'd ever seen her. He wondered if he should ask her if she'd seen Keoni, but then decided he'd ask her later, since she looked so happy now and might go worrying if he asked.

Just as Nikai opened his mouth to ask what kind of news she had Ezekiel appeared. Nikai smiled at him and said, "Congratulations! I'm sure you'll make a great Beta." Then he turned back to Valette, waiting to hear her news.
