He'd wanted Rannoch to stick around, but now that he realized that meant the inevitable requirement of conversation, Gannet couldn't quite function for a moment. How had he been?
"I don't know," he answered honestly, lowering his head as his ears tilted back apologetically. He struggled to find the words for a moment, then finally surfaced with a question. "D'you think they forgot about me?" His tone held no trace of seeking empty validation; it was an honest fear. "They shouldn't come. But they haven't." He finished somewhat lamely, knowing the last phrase was inadequate. He wanted them to stay away, safe from Charon and Ame's anger. But it also worried him that they had felt so secure in allowing him to stay here so long. Perhaps they didn't need him there.
