Whilst the others wandered between the realms of grief and denial, it was change that plagued Pura. They were a pack of zombies, shuffling aimlessly from one day to the next, and few among them - pups or adults - could let go of Junior's absence. Pura was ready to move on from the event, but had picked up on social cues that suggested it would not be appropriate to voice the desire. "Junior dead. Come play." Grammatically, it was fine - even wordy, for Pura. But out loud, it would go down like a tonne of bricks.

The remaining girls were lost to him. He did not share in their intense grief, and their erratic behaviour - his sister regularly talked to herself - made them strange, even off-putting. Pura Virtúte kept to himself. Today, he sat at the very edge of the rendezvous site, as far away from the rest of the pack as possible. Eyes were on him, of course - ever since Junior's disappearance, he had not been permitted to go anywhere without an escort. This rule was driving him to distraction, and he was presently digging in the wet, worm-infested earth to keep himself occupied.
