without powers of sight or of hearing, the tiny brown-hued girl was startled into wakefulness only when heavy sleep lifted like a cloud from her consciousness. her brother's wails, which surely would have agitated her into the same loud state, could not breach her sealed-shut ears. 

instead, upon waking, it was only the thought of food that interested her. her first lesson had been that comfort and happiness came from the teats of some greater being than herself. and thus she latched onto the first thing she could; some odd new teat. unaware that she had merely latched onto the white girl's toe, her peeping increased in frequency as her efforts to gain the same happiness from the toe were in vain.
