All of them were quiet as he prattled on. Even when prompted to come forward with questions, they held their tongues and listened. Smokestep wasn’t sure if it was because they feared a lashing or if they simply didn’t have any qualms with how the pack was run. More than this, the pallid yearling was shocked that his sister and his first mate were able to hold their tongues during his speech. It was likely that they were offering the respect he’d asked for, but he had never known either one of them to hold their thoughts.
 
Finding himself perturbed by the silence, the young Captain rose to stand on all four limbs and flagged his tail down toward his crew. The evening was still young, and they were intended to watch the stars swim through the skies as they mingled. Smokestep did not wish to bore them any longer with the formalities of pack rituals; he had always hated his father’s pretentious meetings. With a spreading grin, the corsair leapt down from his perch and landed at the front of the large boulder. His eyes scanned his crew for a moment, grateful that he had gathered such a fine group of members.
 
“Alright, lads an’ lasses! Let’s catch some fish and tell some stories by moonlight, eh?” With that, the long-legged young man darted toward the rolling waters and crashed into them with reckless abandon. The taste of saltwater on his tongue was refreshing enough, and he emerged with an eager expression in hopes that someone would follow him.
