Dusk offered scarlet skies and the promise of another warm day the following day. Onyxia sat by the creek watching the skies as the rush of the water drowned out the words of her thoughts. The colour of the sky reminded her of back home. The fires, the explosions and the ugly truth about the world all going to sh**. Why was she still here? How was it that she survived the apocalyptic Lower mainland? Was it eventually going to follow her here too? She hoped to God it never would.
Eyes cast down at the creek watching the many fish make their way throughout the water. Were they ok to eat here? Was she going to find something mutated? There was only one way to find out. She hadn't the energy to run off to catch a rabbit or other small prey, so fish was definitely on the menu tonight! The abundance of it told her that this place was healthy, but one must never be too careful in regard to where she came from.
She leapt into the water her head moving side to side as she watched the many fish swim by. They were pretty big, one or two would be just the perfect meal. She had fished many times before so the game wasn't new to her. She enjoyed the rush of the creek flowing past her limbs as she stood there assessing where to strike.
Her movements were sudden like a snake striking its victim, to only come up from the water empty-mouthed. Pulling her face from the water she shook her head and watched again, slowly moving her paws within the water in attempts to slow down some of the passing fish. Darting like a bullet she pried open her jaws and snapped shut onto a medium sized fish which only managed to escape with a slippery wiggle. Patience was learned long ago; it certainly paid off after several attempts. She finally caught a bigger fish and threw it onto dry land behind her. She also learned to never leave a thrown fish unattended either because of other wolves, bears and or other scavengers.
She trotted out of the creek and shook out her pelt, her face, chest and legs were only wet, but it helped to dry herself best she could before digging into her meal. She carefully inspected it with sniffing it, turning it over, and sniffing it some more before digging her fangs into her meal. The fish was a delight and it sure tasted so much better than the fish back home.
When she was finished with that one, she went back into the creek to attempt to catch another one.
