His eyes watched her, thinking over her confusion; but what was there to be confused about? He wanted to stay in the forest, with Cry, until the spring. He huffed, a low and displeased sound, for he was not the most patient of creatures.

"This is Shadewood," he replied, his voice portraying his hard manner, "your home." He watched her intently, his jade gems inspecting her every movement as if he could read them; which he could not. 

Her last statement perplexed him, his head tilting to show for she had spoken in the lupine tongue. He cast his gaze around, expecting to find the young skewbald wolf; but found no one. 
They were alone.
