She had come far to prove a point. Perhaps too far.
At times all Eilonwy could think of was of mom, and how lonely she must be feeling so long without her daughter. But there was another side of her that often took her mind in another direction, and she told herself that she wasn't needed. Chusi had been in this world long before her, and would probably still be there after Eilonwy's inevitable accidental (or self-inflicted (?)) death. Her substantial lack of worry for her brother's disappearance, and if you care enough, the indifference towards their father's abandonment were proof that Chusi was resilient enough to survive without Eilonwy. But that point she was trying to prove? She couldn't do it. Eilonwy was simply physically incapable of living too long, or too far away from her mother.
So she was making her way back to her.
At some point, the girl came across a wide stream, too cold to swim across and way too wide to jump it over; but she thought she had it all figured out when she caught sight of a few broken ice blocks floating down-stream, probably the last of winter. She thought she could jump on them one by one and get across, and she tried it, but she wasn't skilled enough and the slippery surface was too much for her to handle. In the end, Eilonwy had to swim half the creek over to the other side with a twisted paw and a cut on her hind leg. Breathless, shuddering and in too much pain to keep walking, Eilonwy dropped her weight when she reached the shore with a sad and dry thud and curled around herself without a single clue of what to do next. If only Chusi was there to help her, maybe she wouldn's have had to go in such a pitiful, stupid way.
