Yllka hadn't meant to startle the newcomer, but it seemed she had—a little, anyway. The wolf recovered quickly enough, though he seemed a little embarrassed by his reaction. The pale wolfess smiled kindly in hopes of setting him a little more at ease.

When he asked her what she was doing, she actually had to pause for a moment. She was going to say “settling in for the night,” but she has settled hours ago. And she certainly hadn't been sleeping or even trying to sleep.

“I've been trying to watch for the stars,” she said at last.

The grove wasn't ideal with all the trees, but she had found the perfect spot where she could see the stars through the trees, if only the clouds would clear away. But she knew that wasn't likely to happen.

“How long does it rain in the summer here?” she inquired. “Do you know?”
