The name Yao was offered following her request, unusual and yet not; it reminded her almost of her family, her mother, and the few peculiar names strewn throughout their tree. “I’m Yama,” she said in response, exchanging his name for her own. She wondered if she should add where she was from, explain that the neighbouring mountain housed her family, but ultimately bit her tongue and held tight to the words. This was a total stranger, after all—there was no reason for her to share too much about herself, especially since it might do more harm than good.

“Why are you here?” she asked next, only partially satisfied with his answer of far from here. “If you’re from far away... why come here?” She was curious, to say the least—and couldn’t help but wonder, too, if he was from the same place as the other male.
