It smelled like wolves here.
Skífa skulked along the perimeter of the wintry Emberwood, skirting the delicate, graceful aspen that grew in wild profusion here, and the dark snarled conifers that sheltered them. Thick blue shadows clustered between the trees, but the mid-afternoon sunlight sometimes filtered in - angling low and pale gold like the strings of some time-worn instrument. The breeze was cold and crisp as mountain ice, but it spoke of abundant prey, and that was too tempting to avoid. Whether this place was lived-in or not, he had to hunt.
So Skífa limped down into a snowy gully in the woods, ignoring the sharp pang in his right foreleg. He followed the gully westward, toward the gray-blue mountains on the skyline, and kept his head down and his footfalls gentle, hoping to attract as little attention as possible while he tried to find something to eat.
