Even when he had just been a boy, his days had been filled with things that needed doing that weren’t much fun. Tending to the necessities was just part of life, he’d been told. If it wasn’t done by him, it wouldn’t be done at all, and then everyone would suffer. It was for the greater good, or so he’d been led to believe.
