He heard the voices from the shadows he crawled in.
Vaska had not known the end of these caverns when he had entered the crook in the rocks far off in the ice fields. He had childishly wondered if they might lead him to a different realm entirely, one where hunger did not gnaw and where night ruled freely. But cynicism stole the boy and he wondered if he might find a graveyard instead, a tomb where he might settle.
Yet he would fight against the dying light.
What met him instead was an accented purr, in a ways of speaking he had never heard before. The affection dropped with something that reminded him of mother.
The old rabbit fur seemed more present across his shoulders. Vaska tucked himself against the far cavern wall and tempted a peek around the corner of his narrowed crevice at the woman who had spoken.
