Shemesh whined at the thought of traveling two years to find her master, forced to wander alone almost as long as she’d been alive. She’d been on a highway less than a week ago! Had she really gotten that lost, and wandered so far into the wilderness that wolves like Alaric had never seen a road? He had to be mistaken, or lying, or… Or something! It didn’t make any sense to Shemesh. 

Her paws tapped the ground nervously; it didn’t make any sense.

Shemesh forced herself to take a deep breath. Alaric seemed confused, even discomforted by her description of her master; she felt compelled to address that before anything else. ”A human who takes care of you,” she clarified softly, unsure of what she’d said wrong, ”and makes sure you always have food and shelter.” She guessed wolves had packs for that instead.

”Do you know of anyone who has seen a road?” Shemesh asked, desperation creeping into her voice. Alaric was young like her; if she’d never seen a wilderness as vast as the Teekon before, maybe he’d never been in the right place to follow a road. The thought was less comforting the second time around.
