It was a balmy night. Cethleann left the forest at her heel, listening to the gentle buzz of cicadas. She’d finally caught up with Simone a few days before, allowing the other woman to blaze a trail ahead of them happily.
She was taking her time to look at cool bugs anyway. And, like an orbiting comet, they’d always find themselves together again. It was how they worked.
Cethleann hummed a little song to herself as she walked, head tilted back to eye the stars twinkling high above her. A speck of light from in front of her would catch her attention in the end, and she gasped.
A group of them, lazily drifting in the summer breeze. She had unwittingly walked into an entire swarm, the area around her wrapped in a gentle glow. She raised up a paw to one of the little bugs, delight surging through her when it landed on her without any other prompting.

Fireflies!
