She pawed away some of the tears, but there was no way to stop him once he'd started. The spring in him had broken through, and with the river that poured from his eyes, there also came a great big glob of snot from his nose; it rose up as a bubble and popped as he gulped in a breath.

Larus hadn't realized just how screwed up his situation was until this point, and even now he just barely grasped it. His parents were far away; Caiaphas had saved him but he didn't want another mommy. He wanted... He wanted to go home!
