Under moonlight the stranger cut a swift path away from the plateau, light on his feet in spite of the burden he carried. The girl was small, limp after he'd dashed her head against a rock to quiet her struggles. A thin trail of her blood lay in their wake — but the thief wasn't worried at all. Soon he would rejoin his companions.

Nearing dawn, the man laid his prize on the sands to loose a howl into the skies: a call to the rest. Expect trouble, it said. He waited a time, but no answering howl came. The girl began to stir. Reluctantly the thief gathered her up, knowing there would be no rest for him yet.
