While Nox's laughter faded into the distance, Emris pressed on, her strides measured and purposeful as she carved a path eastward. The wind was sharper on this side of the rise, tugging at her thick pelt and carrying with it the faint scent of pine and snow-packed earth. She huffed softly to herself at his parting remark.

The slope here was less steep, opening up into a stretch of flattened ground where the thinning trees created a patchwork of sunlight and shadow. Her lilac eyes scanned the area, sharp and calculating, noting the natural windbreak offered by a thick cluster of evergreens near the edge. The view from here wasn’t bad either—open enough to see across the valley below without leaving them completely exposed.

“Not bad,” she muttered, padding closer to the evergreens to inspect the ground beneath them. It was sheltered, quiet, with enough space to make something of it.
