Leto had lied to him. Beau struggled to understand why. Even if she did not love him, were they not friends at the very least? She had sent him on an impossible quest after a father who did not exist, and a placeholder who was too weak to travel. He felt like she had played a nasty trick on him.
He had contemplated his dilemma for some time during his trek back to the Lowlands, back to Verapaz. He wondered how she was feeling, if he was too late. A part of him hoped she was fat like a swollen frog and losing fur, but for a woman who held so much pride in her appearance he questioned if that may have been too cruel a thought.
The pack's scent was stronger in the pass than usual. He made the choice to cross down into it out of curiosity, if nothing else. Border markings had been laid; either Verapaz was moving, or simply expanding. Throat dry, he let out a bark rather than a howl to announce his arrival. It should echo nonetheless, so what did it matter? He was tired and looking to rest.
