Manman had not taught them how to swim, had not shown them the island as she'd promised and yet with round, trusting eyes, little Noe had allowed his mother to bundle him unto a vessel. He made no complaint as wind pulled at his fur, made not a peep as they beached and rain lashed his face.

Through the blur of the storm, the boy sat hunched and staring, wondering why manman did not wake. Someone else was here, but Noe did not see them. That someone else had taken Fabienne, and it was not long before he too was scooped up into warmth.

The same saltbrine scent was there.
