bawg. chireille announced to no one in particular, somberly holding her paw aloft. 

raising its antennas as it was thrust skyward, the bug on chireille’s arm stared back. chireille was mesmerized by the thousand glinting angles of its eyes — or what approximated as its eyes. she really didn’t know. 

sinking delicately to her haunches, chireille slowly lifted her other forelimb. she held the bug’s unblinking stare intently, captivated by the glittering reflections housed hundred-fold in each compound eye. the bug must have sensed the would-be-murderer’s intentions, for as soon as the shadow of her raised limb crossed over its body, it sprung into the air. 

a mournful pout darkened chireille’s features as the bug flew away, dangling limbs and long wings carrying it up into the summer sky and well out of any ambitious child’s reach.
