Though he made fun of Katmai for his sappy, moppish sentiment, he found it much cuter in Treepie. It was still something he found quite quaint and somewhat bewildering, but he could support her endeavor.

Inwardly, though, he was beginning to feel quite nervous. Was he meant to feel the need and desire for romantic spark? For deep connection? Would he even know it if it came to him? He'd always known intellectually that mothers and fathers were meant to love each other, but now he was realizing that he didn't know how that was accomplished.

Somehow, he maintained a smile, though it had unintentionally gentled into something less wiley and more sincere.

"I have my eyes open," he said instead of answering her question directly. And then, "I'd consider answering more thoroughly if you told me about this someone. I should like to know what takes a man outta the running."
