For a moment, Kindle was shocked into believing that Treepie had tripped and fallen. But the she kept falling, and quite gracefully at that, and he realized she was only hopping nimbly down the treacherous path they'd just ascended. Not, of course, before a horrified yelp had escaped him.

She pranced back up to him while his heart was still pounding, and he was angry — he could have sworn he was angry — about the trick and the scare, but he couldn't seem to wipe the grin off his face.

"Show-off," he accused, but he couldn't seem to mean it. He decided then and there that he'd just have to show her up one of these days. So he paid careful attention to what she was doing, watching where she placed her paws and how she shifted her weight —

That was when he saw it.

Them.

Kindle froze in place just as Treepie began to speak, all thoughts drowned out by white noise as he processed and processed and failed to process what was swinging right in front of his face. While the eternal buffering wheel spun above his head, begging for a reboot, Treepie turned back to him with a pretty smile.

And. It. Moved.

Not hers.

His.

Kindle hastened to catch up, pretending very hard for the both of them that he hadn't noticed a thing. But he was quiet on the hike back down. And he was bashful now in a way he hadn't been at the top of that mountain.

"Thanks," he said at the bottom, seeing her yawn and jumping on the excuse. "I'll let you get some rest. I'll be practicing for next time."
