Hotah jerked awake at Towhee’s shove, blinking hard as sleep ripped away. Her mouth formed the shape of P—and that was all he needed.He was on his feet in an instant.
First, he checked the girls—Tawny Lark, then Fairywren—pressing quick kisses between their ears, grounding himself in their warmth. Safe. Here.
But Peregrine—
Hotah’s chest tightened. He followed Towhee through the den, nose low, scanning the bedding, the earth, anything. The fog outside had already smothered the air inside; scent was thin, directionless.
Towhee burst into the white, calling out. Hotah stepped right beside her, eyes sweeping the dense brume.
He looked to the wolves who could hear, his voice firm but tight.
Listen. He’s close. He has to be.
Then he moved forward into the fog, ready to search every inch until he found their son.
