the puzzle pieces click into place quickly enough. a child was missing. though he didn't know them much yet beyond the occasional glimpse in their direction when one squeaked loud enough to grab his attention, tzar still feels like a stone has suddenly weighed down his heart.

he throws himself headfirst into the thick, cloying fog after hotah and towhee, doubling back after a second to join his mother's side; forgetting for a moment that she, too, was deaf and that the last he wanted was to lose her, too.

he doesn't bother trying to speak or sign ptero. he doubts it will be any use.

he smells nothing that resembled peregrine, glimpsing skyward as ghost disappears into the swallowing fog only to become a disfigured shadow as he cuts back through before landing — roughly — upon tzar's shoulder.

the scream perks his ears, and he tugs at his mother's shoulder, grasping skin and fur firmly in his teeth. -c'mon mom!- the fog played games with him though, getting him all turned around and he hesitates, unsure what direction it had actually came from, offering his mother whose gaze was fiery with worry a sheepishly apologetic expression.
