No one had found her baby uncle. Caro didn't know what to think about that. She felt grief in small ways, and anxious about the volatility of the adults in her life. They were all so upset. It wasn't fair that Peregrine had been lost.

She followed in her mother's paw steps, though far behind for fear of her temperment. No one had taken it out on her, and she wasn't afraid of them or anything. It was just hard, sometimes, to see such open grief and vulnerability on the faces of her most trusted adults.

So she trailed after Amalia, lost in her own worried thoughts. Her preoccupation was such that she did not realize she was gaining ground until she was nearly on her mother's heels. Her ears flew back in apology.

"Hi, mama," she whispered, hating the sound of her voice. She did not like the way that it fractured the silence, disturbing the thick, choking layer of mourning over the land.
