Treepie was staring into space when Wyvern appeared in the eastern sky, winging toward the ledge where the wolf stood. She didn’t notice the nightjar until she swooped down and landed a few yards away, kicking up a sprinkle of sparkling snow. Pie started slightly, then turned dull, lifeless eyes upon the bird.

When the Ostrega didn’t react beyond that, the nighthawk impatiently hopped closer and sprang for the wolf’s shoulder. Pie winced a little when the talons pinched the flesh between her shoulders, though soon her face went blank again. When Wyvern tugged at her nape, she took a step forward.

Expressionless, she let the bird steer her down the mount to the borders. There, Wyvern guided her toward a stocky stranger standing motionless at the foot of the mountain. Treepie blinked and let out a breath, though there was no familiarity as she walked mechanically toward the young man.

Thinking that word made her face crumple. The words she’d meant to speak to him got stuck in her throat as tears sprang to her eyes. Her cheeks grew hot and she turned her face away from the other wolf with a throaty apology.
