Elwood returned Peregrine's greeting with equal enthusiasm, his tail remaining lower than the Alpha's but swinging side to side behind him. As he drew alongside his leader -- and friend, he realized with a small smile -- he dropped his head and bumped his crown against Peregrine's shoulder, then drew back to face him.

"I just ate," he said in response to Peregrine's suggestions, "but a patrol might be nice. Maybe you could give me a few pointers." He didn't think that there would be a lot for Peregrine to teach him, but perhaps he could learn more about the routes around the caldera. There was more to guard than just the borders, because animals other than wolves wouldn't be likely to heed the scent markers. Truthfully, though, the young male would be eager to soak up any information that Peregrine shared like a sponge.
