Suddenly, the family of three grew by two. Fox pushed out a large motley pup followed quickly after by a smaller, reddish one. Peregrine craned his neck, watching as his mate tended to them expertly. He saw that the larger one was another boy, the littler one a girl. She looked just like her mother, though her tail was black. Like me, he thought. Anyone standing outside the den would see his tail thumping the ground.

Once dried, their second-born son revealed a mottled coat of reds, browns, blacks and whites. Nightjar! Peregrine thought. He didn't mention it out loud. Fox was far too busy to discuss names at the moment. That could definitely wait until later. But seeing as they had three, Peregrine already let himself think of the boy by that name. Nightjar, he mentally repeated, his eyes doughy for a moment before they flew wide at his sister's loud blats. Soon enough, though, she settled and he watched all three of them suckle peacefully.

After a long moment, his eyes then drifted up to Fox's face. "Is it over...?" he dared whisper very quietly, wanting badly to lean forward and lick her face, tell he he was proud of her and that he loved her so fucking much it was retarded.
