Their little red screamer was a good sleeper, yet during those sparse waking moments, she made sure everyone else in the caldera was awake too—namely, her parents. Her latest shriek caused Peregrine to startle awake from a light catnap. He blinked the sleep from his eyes and looked at the little banshee, then to Fox's face. She appeared pensive and Peregrine carefully leaned over the pups in between them to nudge her.

"Everything okay?" he asked, his voice quiet because, despite their elder daughter's frequent blats, the atmosphere in here was generally a peaceful one.
