Blacktail Deer Plateau Birdfeeder

A wolf sat under a tree, perfectly still if not for the breeze that ruffled his gray fur. In his teeth was a twig loaded with dried chokecherries, a staple food for many species of birds throughout the long winter months. Koda had learned this by watching them go about their daily lives during his solo patrols along the border. They usually flew away when he approached, so today he was trying a different tactic, hoping to lure them with food.

In the branches above, tiny birds were chirping and preening and foraging for food. They occasionally tilted their heads and peeked down at the wolf sitting below, no doubt curious about what he was trying to do. Not wanting to scare them, Koda never made any sudden movements, not even flinching when tiny bird droppings splashed between his eyes.

Finally, his patience paid off when a bold black-capped chickadee fluttered down to perch on Koda's twig. The wolf held his breath and watched as the bird plucked a berry from the stem and flew off. The encounter lasted less than a second, but Koda was filled with pride at the achievement. He emerged from the bush with haste, he had to tell someone right now.

"Did anyone see that?" He asked, looking around. No one would believe it, otherwise.
